The transition from remote work back to the office can be challenging, especially after years of flexibility during the pandemic. Workers facing this change may feel a mix of emotions, from anxiety to frustration. However, there are several strategies that can make returning to the office more bearable and even enjoyable. I'm not here to tell you a return to commuting will ever be as great as working from bed in your jammies but there can be some upsides to getting out of the house. Let's look at how we can make navigating the return to office a little more bearable, shall we?
1. Create a Comfortable Commuting Routine:
Make your daily commute a more pleasant experience by crafting a routine that caters to your interests.
Listen to audiobooks, podcasts, or music you love during your commute. Use this time for personal growth or relaxation.
2. Build a Flexible In-Office Schedule:
Negotiate a flexible schedule that allows you to ease into office life.
Propose a hybrid work arrangement if it's not offered or arrange staggered office hours to gradually acclimate to the office environment.
3. Personalize Your Workspace:
Customize your workspace to make it feel like your own.
Bring in personal items like plants, artwork, noise cancelling headphones, snacks and drinks, a lamp or lighting that makes your space feel a little more cozy.
4. Embrace the Office as a Social Hub:
View the office as a social opportunity rather than a chore.
Use lunch breaks or coffee breaks to connect with coworkers. Building relationships can make the office more enjoyable.
Maybe this is practice for networking to get yourself a new fully remote job?
5. Invest in Ergonomic Comfort:
Prioritize ergonomics to make your physical workspace more comfortable.
Request an ergonomic chair or accessories like a standing desk converter to improve your work environment.
If you're experiencing any pain or discomfort while performing your duties, consider requesting an ergonomic assessment. Workplace injuries such as repetitive strain are no joke.
6. Advocate for Remote Work Options:
Advocate for remote work, not just for yourself but for the entire team.
Present data on productivity and work-life balance improvements during remote work to make a compelling case for flexible arrangements.
Inquire if there are exceptions to having to come into the office in the case you have extenuating circumstances.
7. Transform Your Commute into Learning Time:
Use your commute as an opportunity for personal growth.
Listen to educational podcasts or audiobooks related to your interests or professional development.
The call back to the office might be the catalyst to moving on and into a brand new role or career. If you're not thrilled with the office life perhaps you'll decide it's a temporary inconvenience. Is it time to do that thing you've always wanted to do that would give you the autonomy you're looking for?
8. Create a Mindful Morning Routine:
Start your day with mindfulness to set a positive tone.
Dedicate a few minutes each morning to meditation, deep breathing, or visualization to reduce stress.
9. Build In Short Breaks:
Incorporate short breaks into your workday to recharge.
Take five-minute breaks to stretch, walk around, or simply enjoy a breath of fresh air.
10. Embrace Change as an Opportunity:
Shift your mindset from resistance to embracing change as a chance for growth.
Write down the skills you hope to acquire or strengthen through this transition and set clear goals to achieve them.
The return to the office doesn't have to be an unwelcome change. By implementing these strategies, you can make the transition more bearable and even discover new opportunities for personal and professional growth.
