I’ve helped over 1000 people solve their career problem. People often come to me feeling unhappy and frustrated. Many tell me their situation is unique and likely more difficult and complex than what I’m used to dealing with. They believe I will need a lot of information and context about their circumstances. They want to make sure I understand. I always listen intently to the details of the situation they share with me. I am always genuinely interested. I believe each one of my clients is unique in the very best way.
Most often though, what they share with me is not unique. Not in the least. So much so that I can usually quite quickly get to the heart of what it is that’s getting in their way. This is my work. It’s what I’ve done all day, every day for over 20 years.
To someone without the training and experience I have, their problem might seem complex. But, most often the problem is not at all new to me. It's something I have helped many people solve. This is because there are only four types of career problems.
Most will fit into one of four categories:
1. Lack of career direction
You’re currently working, maybe you've had several jobs, but nothing has felt quite like the right fit. Nothing seems to bring you the satisfaction you’re looking for. You know what you don't want in your work. But, you have no idea how to choose what you do want. You don’t feel confident about any of the options you’re currently considering.
2. Career setback
You’re in a period of unemployment. You've quit, been let go, or laid off. Maybe you’ve been demoted or put on a performance plan. Perhaps you’ve been injured or become ill and can’t return to the work you once did.
3. Career impatience
You like your job and have a career plan but it’s not going the way you think it should. You’re not progressing as quickly as you’d like. You’re feeling unsure about how to ask for what you want before you start to become resentful.
4. Desire to shift in your career
You've been in a career for a while, and you are ready for a change. You’d like to change professions or industries. Maybe you’re looking to use different skills but don’t know where to start. You aren’t looking to start over from scratch but can’t figure out how to change direction.
Truly, this is much more straightforward than you may be thinking. It only seems confusing to you because this is the part that nobody teaches us in school. Just because you have tried a couple of things that haven’t worked doesn’t mean there is no solution. It’s easy enough to believe this though.
Please don’t! You just need some support! You just need some resources and a solid career strategy. Since you’re here, you’re probably not happy with your career in some way. Start by hearing me say that there are people who have had the same problem as you and figured it out. Start with just the facts of your situation. Identify which of the four categories your situation fits under.
People love to make simple things complicated. Sometimes without even noticing. Let it be simple. Then you’ll be able to focus much better and find specific resources to help.
Cheering you on!
